Who I am and What I do

About Me

I’m a Clinical Mental Health Counselor, a National Certified Counselor, and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Summerville, SC. I’m most passionate about empowering diverse women who are struggling with challenges to heal and achieve well-being. I want women and woman/feminine identified people to know that there is no shame in seeking support and help for their healing and well-being journey, regardless of how they self-identify.

I am here to help my clients recover and find happiness in their work, relationships, and life. My background in health and human services combined with my education, training, credentials, and experience in mental health helps me to help my clients refine their lives and live the life they want to live. I provide a modern approach to counseling and therapy by combining traditional psychotherapy with a practical, problem-solving approach that creates a dynamic and efficient path for change and problem resolution.

Although I work from a wellness model, I can diagnose emotional and psychiatric disorders and guide clients in the process of living with such disorders. My training in addressing the needs of the whole person and in wellness and prevention qualifies us to integrate health care.

About my private practice

Summerville Women’s Mental Health Studio is a private mental health practice providing a modern approach to counseling and therapy. We combine traditional psychotherapy with a practical, problem-solving approach that creates a dynamic and efficient path for change and problem resolution. Although we work from a wellness model, we can diagnose emotional and psychiatric disorders and guide clients in the process of living with such disorders.

Our training in addressing the needs of the whole person and in wellness and prevention qualifies us to integrate health care. We help with healing and well-being to achieve good mental health. We help clients heal and recover from anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, gender dysphoria, and trauma and stressor related disorders.

We serve diverse women including cisgender, transgender, non-binary, and woman/feminine-identified clients. We specialize in women’s mental health and are bilingual, veteran, and LGBTQIA2S+ with lived experience.

About my podcast

Studio Talk Podcast is a weekly podcast about mental health. Our mission is to teach our community listeners about mental health through psychoeducation and to inspire them through social change.
Our style is storytelling.

Everyone has a mental health story to tell. Our approach is very down-to-earth and approachable. This space will not sound clinical or feel unapproachable and off-putting.

We have a story-style delivery and we welcome lots of engagement. We will share our own mental health experiences and have interesting everyday people as our guests to talk about their mental health stories. We will also have other professionals as guests to discuss different topics about mental health.

We invite our listeners to share their mental health stories if they feel safe and comfortable doing so.This is not a therapy session or a self-help space. We do not diagnose or treat on this platform.

You can find us wherever you listen to your podcasts.

Xiomara A. Sosa

Hi, my name is Xiomara A. Sosa. I am the owner and Clinical Director of Summerville Women’s Mental Health Services.

I am a bilingual Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor-Candidate. I am supervised by Dr. Latrice Love, a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor.

I am Latina, born and raised in the Bronx, New York City, NY.

I am a first-generation college graduate and a very proud daughter of immigrants from Puerto Rico (a territory of the US) and the Dominican Republic.

When I am not working with the people I serve inside and outside of my communities, you can find me working on my nonprofit organization, The X-Studio: A Mental Health Cooperative, or on my podcast, The X-Podcast: Real Conversations About Mental Health.

Education

I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Phoenix University and my Master of Science Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Forensic Counseling from Walden University, both CACREP-accredited universities.

I have been serving clients since 2012, working in case management and other capacities, including counseling/therapy. My work has been consistently serving women and all other underrepresented communities, including communities of color, the LGBTQIA2S+ community, and the veteran community. The bulk of my work has been in anxiety, depression, dysphoria, and trauma/stressor-related disorders, and other specialty areas and issues.

My specialization is women’s mental health, integrative mental health (IMH), and multicultural counseling/therapy. My foundation is in cultural competency and social change advocacy. I focus on combining evidence-based treatment with alternative therapies. My focal point is on treating the whole person, not just the symptoms of a particular illness or concern. That includes mental health, physical health, emotional well-being, interpersonal relationships, and spiritual needs. I help clients identify patterns in their lives that may contribute to their struggles and work on developing strategies for making healthier choices. I am also a 9/11 survivor and a proud United States Air Force and Army veteran. You can read my full bio on my website at www.swmhs.net
