Multidisciplinary Team (MDT)

For clients with complex needs, a mental health provider might refer them to a multidisciplinary team (MDT). This approach is common in both hospitals and community settings.

  • What it is: A group of professionals from different specialties who work together to coordinate a person's care.

  • Who is on the team: Members can include psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, and psychiatric nurses.

  • Purpose: To provide a comprehensive, holistic approach to treatment that can lead to better patient outcomes.

Referral network

A referral network is a formal or informal group of trusted professionals to whom a mental health provider regularly sends clients. The purpose of this is to ensure patients receive the right kind of specialized care.

  • What it is: A web of professional relationships with other practitioners, such as therapists, counselors, and psychiatrists who may have different specializations.

  • Purpose: To connect patients with resources that best fit their specific needs, preferences, and insurance coverage.

  • How it works: Providers may build these relationships over time or use formal online directories and platforms to find and refer clients to other specialists.
